For more than 20 years, the use of role-playing games and simulations in history classrooms
has been well studied. Our research falls within this perspective and focuses on the ability
of these activities, as reported in the literature, to promote the development of historical
empathy. To provide elements of answers to this question, the metasynthesis stands out as
an appropriate method to better understand the pedagogical choices behind the use of
role-playing games and simulations by teachers. The metasynthesis also allowed us to
obtain an overview of the literature on the use of role-playing games and simulations and
to retain 17 articles dealing with real experience in the classroom from the 50 articles
collected. Our results reveal that 1) these activities, by their intrinsic mechanisms, are
favorable to the development of historical empathy, 2) pragmatic considerations are
necessary to favor the development of historical empathy, 3) the reference terminologies
of historical empathy as well as role-playing and simulation games are always confusing and
finally 4) role-playing games and simulations seem to be primarily used by teachers for the
aspect of enjoyment.
