La traduction chantable de chansons populaires : stratégies de traduction appliquées à huit chansons de l’auteure-compositrice-interprète péruvienne Chabuca Granda (espagnol-français)

Abstract

Ce mémoire porte sur la traduction chantable de huit chansons populaires de l’auteure et compositrice Chabuca Granda, de l’espagnol au français. Le terme « traduction chantable » désigne toute chanson traduite destinée à être chantée en langue cible. Ces chansons ont été traduites, chantées et enregistrées, accompagnées de percussions, sur les rythmes propres à chacune, selon une approche fonctionnaliste. Le cadre théorique comprend deux approches. Celle de Peter Low (2005), développée à partir de la théorie skopos de Vermeer (1978 ; 2000), appelée « principe du pentathlon » énumère cinq critères permettant de guider le travail du traducteur de chansons, à savoir : la chantabilité, le sens, l’idiomaticité, le rythme et la rime. Ensuite, celle d’Andrew Kelly, conçue à l’origine comme une approche pédagogique pour l’apprentissage du français et qui a fini par devenir une référence pour la traduction de chansons, avec les critères suivants : les rythmes, le sens, le style, les rimes, le son, le récepteur et les paroles de la chanson originale. Outre ces critères, les traductions présentées comportent certaines adaptations et recréations. Le cœur du mémoire consiste en l’analyse détaillée des traductions. Pour chacune d’elles, les critères énoncés ci-dessus sont pris en compte ainsi que le rythme, le contexte et les défis posés par le texte original. Les chansons ont été chantées et enregistrées à la fois en espagnol et en français, et se retrouvent annexées à la fin du document. Enfin, bien que les approches de Low et Kelly se soient avérées applicables aux côtés de l’adaptation et la recréation, le choix des critères de traduction peut toutefois varier en fonction de l’objectif du traducteur.

This master’s thesis examines the singable translation from Spanish to French of eight songs by Peruvian author and composer Chabuca Granda. The term “singable translation” refers to any translated song intended to be sung in the target language. These songs were translated, sung, and recorded with percussion, in the rhythm of each song, using a functionalist approach. The theoretical framework is composed by two approaches. Peter Low’s approach (2005) from Vermeer’s (1978; 2000) theory of Skopos, known as the “pentathlon principle.” In which Low lists five criteria that could guide the work of the song translators, for singable translation of songs, that is singability, sense, naturalness, rhythm, and rhyme. Then, Andrew Kelly’s song translation strategy was originally conceived as a pedagogical approach to learning French and is now a reference for song translation with the following criteria: rhythms, meaning, style, rhyme, sound, intended listeners, and original lyrics. Beside these criteria, these translations include some adaptations and recreations. The heart of this thesis is about the detailed analysis of the translated songs. Translation criteria mentioned above, as well as rhythm, context, and the challenge of the original text are applied to each song. Once translated, each song was recorded and sung in both Spanish and French and is attached at the end of the document. Finally, even though that Kelly’s and Low’s approaches, along with adaptation and recreation strategies can apply, the choice of translation criteria will depend on the translator’s objectives.

Esta memoria trata sobre la traducción cantable de ocho canciones de la autora y compositora Chabuca Granda, del español al francés. Compréndase Traducción cantable, como a toda canción traducida para ser cantada en lengua meta. Estas canciones han sido traducidas, cantadas y grabadas, acompañadas por la percusión, en los ritmos propios de cada canción desde un enfoque funcionalista. El marco teórico está constituido por dos enfoques. El de Peter Low (2005) elaborado a partir de la teoría del Skopos de Vermeer (1978; 2000), llamado el “Principio del pentatlón”, el cual enumera cinco criterios que permiten guiar el trabajo del traductor de canciones, a saber: la cantabilidad, el sentido, la idiomaticidad, el ritmo y la rima. Seguido por el de Andrew Kelly, concebido en un principio como un enfoque pedagógico para el aprendizaje del francés y el cual terminó convirtiéndose en un referente para la traducción de canciones según los siguientes criterios: los ritmos, el sentido, el estilo, las rimas, el sonido, el receptor y la letra original. A parte de estos criterios, las traducciones propuestas contienen adaptaciones y recreaciones. El núcleo de la memoria consiste en el análisis detallado de cada canción traducida. Para cada una de ellas, son tomados en cuenta los criterios de traducción mencionados anteriormente junto con el ritmo, el contexto y el desafío que presenta el texto original. Las canciones han sido cantadas y grabadas tanto en español como en francés, y se encuentran anexadas al final del documento. Finalmente, a pesar de que tanto el enfoque de Kelly como el de Low, junto con la adaptación y la recreación puedan aplicarse, la selección de los criterios de traducción puede variar según el objetivo del traductor.
