Thesis or Dissertation
Abstract(s)
The poor mental health of university students has been documented in several
studies. This reality also concerns nursing students. Systematic reviews have
demonstrated the effectiveness of peer support interventions to improve mental
health in diverse populations. Qualitative studies have shown benefits for peers who
offer support, but also highlight issues associated with the peer role.
This descriptive qualitative study aimed to describe and better understand the support
offered by peers as well as the perceived benefits and issues related to this type of
support in the context of a nursing peer support program. To do this, semi-directed
interviews were conducted with five peers who participated in this program. The
content analysis carried out revealed that it is an informal support in connection with
academic aspects which aims to facilitate the progress of students in the perception
of their problematic situation and the identification of solutions by themselves. For this
support to be possible, the peer must develop a helping relationship with the student
based on an open approach and facilitated by personal characteristics and
experiences as well as basic communication skills. Benefits are identified for peers
and students. In connection with these results, some recommendations for training,
management and research in nursing sciences are formulated.
