Abstract

Krzysztof Pawlowski est un architecte et urbaniste spécialisé dans les questions liées à l’histoire de l’urbanisme et à la revitalisation des complexes historiques urbains. Diplômé de la Faculté d’architecture de l’École polytechnique de Varsovie, il a obtenu son doctorat en 1965. De 1974 à 1982, il a été conservateur général-adjoint des Monuments historiques en Pologne. Il s’est ensuite établi en France pour enseigner. Il a d’ailleurs publié plusieurs ouvrages sur l’urbanisme en France, tels que Circulades languedociennes de l'an mille: naissance de l'urbanisme européen (Montpellier : Presses du Languedoc, 1992) et Tony Garnier. Les débuts de l'urbanisme fonctionnel en France (Paris : Centre de recherche d’urbanisme, 1967). En 2000, il est devenu directeur de l’Institut d’architecture et d’urbanisme de l’Université technique de Łódź. Par ailleurs, il siège depuis 2001 sur le Comité d’architecture et d’urbanisme de l’Académie polonaise des sciences. Il continue également d’enseigner à l’Université de technologie de Lublin. Maintes fois décoré, Pawlowski a notamment reçu un doctorat honorifique de l’Université polytechnique de Lviv (2009), a été nommé Chevalier et officier de l’ordre français des Arts et des Lettres (2011) et s’est vu remettre la médaille du Mérite culturel polonais, Gloria Artis (2015) et le prix Vitruvius du l’Académie polonaise des sciences (2018).

Outre ses nombreuses réalisations académiques, Krzysztof Pawlowski a grandement contribué à la conservation du patrimoine culturel en Pologne et à l’international. À cet égard, il a réalisé plusieurs missions pour l’UNESCO en Europe, en Afrique et en Asie. Deux fois président d’ICOMOS Pologne (1981-1984 et 1993-2002), il a également été vice-président d’ICOMOS International. Il a connu les toutes premières sessions du Comité du patrimoine mondial, d’abord en tant que vice-président du Comité (1977) puis comme rapporteur (1978).

L’interviewé y raconte son implication dans les débuts de la Convention du patrimoine mondial, notamment les efforts déployés pour inscrire les premiers sites polonais sur la Liste du patrimoine mondial, y compris la nomination difficile d’Auschwitz-Birkenau. Il insiste aussi sur l’importance de mettre davantage d’efforts dans la conservation et la gestion adéquate des biens : pour lui, inscrire un site au patrimoine mondial implique autant de responsabilités que d’honneur.

Krzysztof Pawlowski is an architect and urban planner specializing in issues related to the history of urbanism and the revitalization of historic urban complexes. Graduated from the Faculty of Architecture of the Warsaw Polytechnic, he obtained his doctorate in 1965. From 1974 to 1982, he was Assistant General Curator of Historical Monuments in Poland. He then moved to France to teach. He has published several books on urban planning in France, such as Circulades languedociennes de l'an mille: naissance de l'urbanisme européen (Montpellier: Presses du Languedoc, 1992) and Tony Garnier. Les débuts de l'urbanisme fonctionnel en France (Paris: Center de recherche d'urbanisme, 1967). In 2000, he became director of the Institute of Architecture and Urban Planning of the Łódź Technical University. In addition, since 2001 he has been on the architecture and urban planning committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences. He also continues to teach at the Lublin University of Technology. Often decorated, Krzysztof Pawlowski received an honorary doctorate from the Polytechnic University of Lviv (2009), has been appointed Knight and Officer of the French Order of Arts and Letters (2011) and was awarded the Medal of Merit for Polish culture, Gloria Artis (2015) and the Vitruvius Prize of the Polish Academy of Sciences (2018).

In addition to his many academic achievements, Krzysztof Pawlowski has contributed greatly to the conservation of cultural heritage in Poland and abroad. In this regard, he has carried out several missions for UNESCO in Europe, Africa and Asia. He has twice been President of ICOMOS Poland (1981-1984 and 1993-2002) and has also been Vice President of ICOMOS International. He attended the first sessions of the World Heritage Committee, first as Vice-President of the Committee (1977) and then as Rapporteur (1978).

The following audio excerpts come from an interview with Krzysztof Pawlowski by Christina Cameron in May 2018 in Warsaw. The interviewee recounts his involvement in the beginnings of the World Heritage Convention, notably his efforts to include the first Polish sites on the World Heritage List, including the difficult nomination of Auschwitz-Birkenau. He also stressed the importance of putting more effort into the conservation and proper management of properties: for him, inscribing a World Heritage site is as much responsibility as an honour.
