Historien et archéologue tunisien, Azedine Beschaouch est spécialiste de l’Afrique antique. Après des études à l’École normale supérieure de Paris, il travaille en Tunisie comme inspecteur des Antiquités avant d’être nommé directeur de l’Institut national d’Archéologie et d’Art (aujourd’hui Institut national du patrimoine) en 1973. En tant que maire-adjoint de Carthage entre 1975 et 1990, il concourt à l’inscription de ce site antique sur la Liste du patrimoine mondial en 1979. À partir de cette période, il occupe également divers postes au sein du patrimoine mondial de l’UNESCO. Il siège d’abord au Comité en tant que représentant de son pays : il est rapporteur en 1981 puis deux fois président, en 1989 et 1991. L’année suivante, il devient le représentant du sous-directeur général pour la culture. Chargé de missions spéciales pour le patrimoine en Palestine, en Bosnie-Herzégovine et au Cambodge, il est particulièrement impliqué dans la sauvegarde d’Angkor. Membre de l’Académie tunisienne des Sciences, des Lettres et des Arts et Officier de la Légion d’honneur de France, Azedine Beschaouch est aussi conseiller du vice-premier ministre du Royaume du Cambodge. Au nombre de ses publications, on compte notamment Mustitana. Recueil des nouvelles inscriptions latines de Mustis (Klincksieck, 1968), Recherches archéologiques franco-tunisiennes à Bulla Regia (École française de Rome, 1983) et La légende de Carthage (Gallimard, 1993). Les extraits audio suivants sont issus d’une entrevue menée avec Azedine Beschaouch par Christina Cameron et Mechtild Rössler en juillet 2010 à Brasilia au Brésil. Par ses nombreux souvenirs, il fait le récit des premières années de la Convention et retrace l’évolution du processus d’inscription et de gestion des biens sur la Liste du patrimoine mondial. À travers une multitude d’exemples concrets tirés de sa longue expérience à l’UNESCO, il raconte les défis, les subtilités, les faiblesses et les réussites de cet outil de coopération internationale.
