La continuité psychologique selon Derek Parfit : examen critique d'un critère d'identité

Abstract

L’objectif de ce mémoire est d’apporter un regard critique sur la vision de l’identité personnelle selon Derek Parfit. Bien qu’il souhaite défendre la thèse de l’inimportance de l’identité personnelle plutôt qu’une thèse positive sur celle-ci, il admet dans ses écrits tardifs la nécessité de se prononcer minimalement puisque juger de l’inimportance de l’identité personnelle suppose une certaine conception de celle-ci. Il proposera que la conception néo-lockéenne de l’identité, constituée par une continuité psychologique ancrée dans assez de cerveau pour la maintenir, est ce que nous avons de mieux comme critère d’identité, malgré que celui-ci échoue parfois à déterminer l’identité dans le temps d’une personne, ce pour quoi il affirmera que l’identité n’est pas ce qui importe. S’il advenait que des théories de l’identité puissent remplacer celle-ci, peut-être devrions-nous alors revoir la thèse de l’inimportance. Nous nous pencherons donc principalement sur la thèse corporelle de Judith Jarvis Thomson, l’animalisme de Eric Olson et le narrativisme de Paul Ricoeur, Daniel Dennett et Charles Taylor afin de voir si leurs critiques envers Parfit tiennent et s’il y aurait lieu de remplacer la thèse néo-lockéenne. Nous devrons aussi ponctuellement étendre notre analyse pour expliquer et contrer certaines critiques, tel que nous le ferons avec la thèse de la survenance de Catherine Sutton lorsque nous voudrons rendre compte du problème du surplus de penseurs soulevé par Olson. Nous espérons montrer que la thèse néo-lockéenne est effectivement ce que nous avons de mieux si nous y adjoignons une conception narrativiste du Soi et que Parfit peut, à chaque étape, maintenir sa thèse de l’inimportance.

The goal of this thesis is to have a critical overview of Derek Parfit’s vision of personal identity. While he tries to defend the thesis of the unimportance of personal identity instead of a particular positive thesis about identity, he admits the necessity, in his later writings, of having a minimal conception of identity since judging of its importance supposes having a certain conception of it. He will propose that the neo-lockean conception of identity, constituted by a psychological continuity embodied in enough of a brain to maintain it, is the best criterion that we have although it sometimes fails to determine the identity of a person over time, warranting his analysis of the unimportance of identity. If it happens that better thesis could replace the neo-lockean conception, perhaps we would have to rethink the unimportance thesis. Accordingly, we will consider the body thesis of Judith Jarvis Thomson, the animalist conception of Eric Olson and the narrativist thesis of Paul Ricoeur, Daniel Dennett and Charles Taylor to see if their critics against Parfit can be maintained and if you would have to replace the neo-lockean thesis. We will have to extend our analysis from time to time to explain and block certain critics such as when we will call on the supervenience thesis of Catherine Sutton to explain away the too-many-thinkers problem shown by Olson. We hope to show that the neo-lockean thesis is effectively the best that we have if we join it to a narrativist conception of the Self and that Parfit can maintain at each step his thesis of the unimportance of identity.
