L’adaptation religieuse au contexte socioculturel : une église évangélique montréalaise

Abstract

Le christianisme évangélique en contexte québécois est façonné par différents facteurs, dont les mouvements migratoires et la transnationalisation, l’intervention prosélyte, l’évolution de la société et l’individualisation croissante du religieux à l’ère moderne. L’étude de cas que nous avons réalisée au sein d’une église évangélique montréalaise permet de constater un effort d’adaptation socioculturelle à son contexte local, particulièrement au niveau de ses pratiques et de sa vie de communauté. Or, nous démontrons que ces adaptations ne sont pas isolées et s’insèrent plutôt dans un mouvement plus large. Elles sont influencées par l’évolution de cette religion au Québec et visent à favoriser la croissance du christianisme évangélique dans son contexte local.

Evangelical Christianity in the Quebec context is shaped by various factors, including migratory movements, transnationalism, proselytizing, the evolution of the society and the growing individualization of religion in the modern era. Indeed, the case study I carried out in a Montreal Evangelical church reveals an effort of socio-cultural adaptation specific to the local context, particularly with respect to practice and community life. I show that these changes are not an isolated phenomenon but rather they take place in the context of a wider movement. They are influenced by the evolution of this religion in Quebec and are oriented to contribute to the growth of Evangelical Christianity in the local context.
