Parler de Shoah/Shoah : histoire d’un usage culturel et politique (1985-2015)

Abstract

En France, actuellement, la Destruction des Juifs d’Europe est désignée par le terme « Shoah ». Cela découle d’un acte de nomination effectué par Claude Lanzmann lors de la sortie du film éponyme (1985). Cependant, effectuer un lien direct entre cet acte de discours et cet usage naturalisé dans l’espace public est questionnable. Cet article, qui croise une approche contrefactuelle et une analyse des discours, interroge la période durant laquelle ce terme émerge dans la langue française. Il conduit à comprendre comment le discours d’accompagnement de Shoah est devenu un discours politique sur la Shoah.

Currently, in France, the Destruction of the European Jews is commonly termed “Shoah.” This is based on an act of speech performed by Claude Lanzmann at the time of the release of the film Shoah (1985). Yet, it remains problematic to establish a direct relationship between this act of speech and the use of the word in the public space. This article, then, which brings together the methods of counterfactual approach and discourse analysis, focuses on the period during which the term came to be integrated within the French language. It makes clear how the companion discourse to Shoah gave rise to a political discourse about the Holocaust in France.
