Catherine Dumesnil a été introduite au patrimoine mondial en 1996, lors de sa prise de fonction comme conseillère technique pour la culture à la Commission française pour l’UNESCO. Personne n’étant alors responsable de la Convention du patrimoine mondial à la Délégation permanente de la France, c’est elle qui a pris en charge ce rôle auprès du chef de la Délégation. Ses fonctions, de nature plus diplomatique que technique, l’ont appelée à superviser le bon déroulement des procédures et l’aboutissement des dossiers de candidature. Elle a participé à la majorité des réunions du Comité entre 1996 et 2009. En 2006, elle est nommée au grade de chevalier dans l’ordre des Arts et des Lettres de France. En 2010, elle devient conseillère à la Délégation de l’Union européenne auprès de l’OCDE et de l’UNESCO à Paris. Les extraits audio suivants sont issus d’une entrevue menée avec Catherine Dumesnil par Christina Cameron et Mechtild Rössler en novembre 2009 au siège de l’UNESCO à Paris. Elle y partage sa vision positive et optimiste de la Convention du patrimoine mondial, en soulignant ses grandes réussites. Tout à fait consciente des défis inhérents à la Convention, elle applaudit le bon travail des principaux acteurs impliqués dans son application, notamment le Comité, les organes consultatifs et le Centre du patrimoine mondial. Sa grande connaissance des aspects procéduraux de la Convention et des programmes culturels de l’UNESCO ouvre une perspective globale sur les enjeux du patrimoine mondial.
