Peut-on en finir avec La mort du roi Arthur?

Abstract

À plus d’un titre, La Mort du roi Arthur est un texte de la limite. Avec la mort du roi annoncée dès les premières lignes, le roman lie la narration à une réflexion sur l’écriture de la fin. Il relate à la fois le terme d’une vie, celle du roi qui sert de repère aux biographies romanesques d’autres héros, mais il marque aussi le terme d’une suite romanesque et se trouve ainsi confronté à la question de la clôture d’un cycle. L’écriture de la Mort du roi Arthur participe par ailleurs d’une esthétique eschatologique caractéristique de l’imaginaire du Moyen Âge central. Or, malgré cette omniprésence de la fin du monde, le roman n’arrive pas à une parfaite clôture et contribue à alimenter le questionnement sur la possibilité, ou non, de jamais en finir avec la matiere de Bretagne.

In many ways, La Mort du roi Arthur could be described as obsessed with limits. With the king’s death foretold from the first lines, it ties the narrative together with a reflection on what it means to finish a story. La Mort du roi Arthur tells the last moments of the king who represented a standpoint for other fictional biographies, but it also marks the end of a sequence and is thus confronted with the question of the closure of a cycle. The writing of La Mort du roi Arthur also participates in an eschatological aesthetic, characteristic of the imagination of the central Middle Ages. Despite this fascination for the end of the world, the romance does not come to a perfect end and thus contributes to raising questions about the possibility, or not, of never ending the “matiere de Bretagne”.
