Écritures et architectures : (im)matérialité de l'image et de l'espace dans le roman court

Abstract

Le roman court (fiction brève, novella) permet de penser l'architecture au sein du texte littéraire au-delà de sa capacité à représenter la construction du texte et sa structure narrative. Dans "Le jardin aux sentiers qui bifurquent" (Fictions), Jorge Luis Borges propose une conception de l'espace et du temps qui met en rapport le livre en tant qu'objet matériel et l'espace déployé par la fiction. Cette nouvelle nous sert donc de grille de lecture, à travers laquelle sont étudiées les œuvres du corpus : L'homme atlantique (Marguerite Duras), L'occupation des sols (Jean Echenoz), Dora Bruder (Patrick Modiano) et Tentative d'épuisement d'un lieu parisien (Georges Perec). En effet, l'espace de la fiction imaginé par Borges élargit les possibilités d'interprétation de ces courts textes, qui occupent un espace physique limité, à la fois en tant qu'objets matériels et mondes possibles. Les architectures habitées ou habitables développées par ces textes permettent une concentration de l'espace et du temps, ce qui porte à croire qu'elles peuvent être lues comme un texte et une image tout à la fois : elles participent de l'efficacité des textes courts. Le présent essai postule que la brièveté d'une œuvre littéraire a des répercussions sur l'espace de la fiction : ainsi condensé, plié, il met en contact des univers parallèles, ouvrant des brèches dans les strates du récit et favorisant la métalepse au sein de la narration. C'est ce que nous révèle l'étude comparative des œuvres sélectionnées.

The short novel (fiction short story, novella) allows to rethink architecture within the literary text beyond its capacity to represent the construction of the text and its narrative structure. In "The Garden of Forking Paths" (Fictions), Jorge Luis Borges offers a conception of space and time which connects the book as a physical objet and the space unfolded by the fictional text. This short story serves us as a reading grid, through which are studied the following works: L'homme atlantique (Marguerite Duras), L'occupation des sols (Jean Echenoz), Dora Bruder (Patrick Modiano) and Tentative d'épuisement d'un lieu parisien (Georges Perec). Indeed, the fictional space as conceived by Borges, expands the possible interpretations of these short novels, which concretely occupy a limited physical space, both as material objects and possible worlds. Architectures, inhabited or habitable, developed by these texts, enable a concentration of space and time, suggesting that they can be read both as text and image: they participate in the efficiency of the short text. This essay postulates that the brevity of a literary work has an impact on the fictional space: thus condensed, folded, it puts in contact parallel universes, opening gaps in narrative strata and promoting metalepsis within the narrative. This is what the comparative study of selected works helps reveal.
