Similarly to other fairy tales, Vietnamese folktales were transmitted orally by way of a performance. As tools for education and entertainment, their main goal was (and still is) to transfer a system of beliefs and values, a tradition and a culture to following generations. When writing came to be, there was a movement from the oral performance towards the written text. Many researchers attempted to establish a typology, but to no avail.
Starting with the idea that the transcription of oral language to the written one is a metaphorical translation, the following work will examine which elements of Propp’s morphology are recurrent in four Vietnamese folktales and, more importantly, concludes that the most salient values are transferred throughout the diaspora through the translation of folktales’ magical elements.
