| fr |
dcterms.abstract | Through the theme of the literary representation of the philosophical concept that is “l’absurde”, or, to put it another way, the theme of the thinness of existence, this article aims to shed a light on a major motif of the modern novel from the first half of the twentieth century: the cafe. We learn with Roquentin in “La Nausée” or with Sartre in “L’Être et le néant” that the cafe is a place where the existence is noticed, weighed and studied. We will focus on the opposition between the cafe as a fixed and humdrum location, and the street, full of turmoil and overturns. It is through this play between rest and speed, specific to the dialectic of the cafe and the street, that the novel is able to reflect the modern way of existence and, therefore, his own. This article will travel through two novels that have been chosen for their temporal and thematic complementarity: on one hand, Raymond Queneau’s “Le Chiendent” (1933), and on the other hand, Alain Robbe-Grillet’s “Les Gommes” (1953). | fr |
