After briefly presenting two conceptual trends in emotional intelligence, we examine the impact of this construct on seven aspects of working life : leadership, employee training, personnel selection, task performance, conflict management, workplace attitudes and workplace well-being. When first introduced, emotional intelligence promised to revolutionize the working world; however, a large number of studies have since demonstrated that it does not hold weight, particularly with respect to its validity. Compared to the predictive value of the intelligence quotient (IQ), emotional intelligence has shown only weak predictive power, despite the carefully designed instruments its proponents developed to measure its effects.
